Garbage diet: Sweden leads world in waste reduction

While most of the developed world is engaged in enthusiastic efforts to reduce waste, most of the Earth’s trash – about 59% - still ends up in landfills.

But when it comes to waste reduction, Sweden is far ahead of the global curve, producing nearly zero waste with a garbage-reduction system it implemented nearly 50 years ago.

When the program started in 1975, about 62% of Swedish waste went to landfills. Today, about half of the rest of the country’s 4.4 million tons of household garbage is recycled, and the other half is incinerated and converted into energy by a process called waste-to-energy (WTE).

Home and business owners filter and separate waste, which is then sent to different waste-management systems, recyclers, and processors.

What remains of the waste (about half) is trucked to the nation’s 32 WTE plants, which burn the treated garbage, heating water to generate steam. The steam spins turbines which produce electricity.

Swedish law requires waste producers to pay for the WTE handling costs. The WTE system isn’t perfect – it can be pricey and is known to release environmental pollutants. But it is constantly evolving and innovating. And in fact, the Swedes have become so efficient at converting trash to power, they need more to serve their electric needs.

As of 2016, Sweden annually imported 800,000 tons of waste from countries like the UK, Norway, Italy, and Ireland.
