‘American Pie’ celebrates 50 epic years

Fifty years ago, singer Don McLean delivered his magnum opus, as the epic rock ballad “American Pie” swiftly rose to #1 on the Billboard charts.

The 8½ minute song traces the history of music and politics through the turbulent 1960s, beginning with the 1959 plane crash that killed singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson – “The Day the Music Died.”

Part history, part allegory and all poetry, the tune hit a nerve in the era of Vietnam, Watergate, and the Energy Crisis. Half a century later, it continues to be a source of profound inspiration for musicians and music fans alike.

In 2001, “American Pie” placed fifth in a list of 365 “Songs of the 20th Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A children’s book, Don McLean’s American Pie: A Fable, arrives in June. In July, the documentary The Day the Music Died, which traces the tune’s creation, premieres on the streaming service Paramount+.

McLean, now 76, is currently on an international tour that runs through the end of November. On Feb. 3, he played in Clear Lake, IA, the date, and site where that fateful flight crashed 63 years ago.
